Paris: Food Market

We spent one morning exploring a fresh food market. Things that don’t need refrigeration (mostly veg) were outside; meats, fish and cheese were inside.

A few interesting things:

1. French people always ask where something was grown or produced because different regions or countries have different techniques and rules (eg, what is considered organic). Our guide Agathe said even something like Chardonnay would taste different depending on its region of origin.

2. Agathe said leeks and green beans were served almost daily in her home. (I don’t think I had a leek until I was 40!)

3. Bakeries were always closed one day/week, with neighborhoods coordinating so at least one bakery was always available. If a bakery was open 7days/week, it meant the bread was not cooked on site.

4. Fish was very fresh except on Mondays, because there were no deliveries on Sunday.

  1. So interesting to hear about grocery shopping in France! Did Agathe mention if people in France typically shop for one day’s food at a time, as I learned in high school French class? Since that particular nugget of info first hit my ears over 5 decades have gone by – two generations – but I still hope that particular aspect of French culture hasn’t changed.

Keep posting, I love reading your blog! Jean

    1. Hi, Jean! She didn’t mention it, and I forgot to ask! It was implied for bread, at least! ❤️
