I can’t get enough of ancient Egyptian art and culture. Most museums I have visited have a few relics. I know this is problematic- these relics belong to the people of Egypt, not (in this case) the people of Brooklyn. Yet, I admit to feeling joy that I have been exposed to this culture since my youth specifically because items were in NYC. My family and I were fortunate to travel to Egypt in 1997, but most people can’t. How do we reconcile the desire to share an amazing culture with honoring the descendants of that culture?
While pondering that question, here are some relics on display at the Brooklyn museum:
