The very crude way I understand the history of Taiwan is that China had a civil war and Mao Zedong’s communist party beat the ruling party led by president Chiang Kai-Shek. In 1949 President Chiang and over 2 million military and civilians fled to the province of Taiwan.
Some believe Taiwan is a part of China, some believe Taiwan is the true China, some believe they are separate countries. Apparently a small minority of those in Taiwan want to join the US as a state.
While the monument, that has the feel of the Lincoln Memorial combined with Lincoln Center because there is a national theater and performance center on the huge plaza, praises Chiang, he is described as a dictator by some with a violent history. Apparently his son was president after Chiang’s death in 1975 and was known for modernizing Taiwan.
There was a changing of the guards that felt like a dance.
