Taj Mahal, Agra

I have wanted to visit the Taj Mahal for as long as I can remember. It didn’t rank as high as Cinderella’s castle in Disney, but once I visited that in 1999, this was next on my list.

It exceeded my expectations. The workmanship, completed in the 1600’s without modern tools, is beyond belief. Parts that look like paint are actually jewels. Walls, towers and windows are lined up so perfectly within the palace and with neighboring buildings. Breathtaking.

The palace was built to honor the king’s dead first wife who died at age 39, shortly after giving birth to their 16ish child in 19 years. Gulp. He promised to build a lasting monument, to spoil their kids, and to never remarry. Of course, he already had wife 2 and 3, but he never took on a wife 4. The Taj took 22 years to build.

Enjoy some pictures!
