Prologue

Clearwater Beach, FL – April 23, 2022 – Henry loved sunsets
April 2, 2022 – our last family photo, taken at Aryn and Naveen’s wedding in Philly

In November 2022, I was widowed. That’s the passive way of saying my wonderful husband died nine months after he received a diagnosis of terminal cancer. I choose a passive tense around the change of my status from “spouse” to “widow” because I did not choose that, did not want it, and did nothing to create it.

With respect to our lives, however, I choose active verbs because Henry and I chose activity. We spent those last nine months having fun: traveling, eating, visiting friends and family, attending weddings and baseball games all over the country, and cherishing sunsets. We didn’t watch life pass us by and wait for Henry’s untimely death. We chose to make more memories, to talk, to laugh, to cry, to pray, to sing and to love.

Now, almost three months after Henry’s death, I choose to remain active. I choose to continue to have fun, even as I miss him. I choose to open myself up to opportunities and experiences. I choose to learn about, and see, the world and its people.

This blog starts with my first vacation without Henry or my kids. I am out of my comfort zone, not traditionally a solo traveler, nonetheless embarking on this adventure just shy of the third month-versary of his death and a few weeks shy of my 60th birthday. Here I go.
