2023 was quite a summer in Chicago. Like many places across the country we experienced extreme heat and smoke from wild fires. I had extreme joy as I took in the arts, food and Suzie and Char’s wedding. And, I had extreme sadness as we lost our good friend Robert in July and continued to miss Henry.
I think Chicago represents all of the profoundly good and sad for me. I love its diversity, but hate its segregation. I love its glamour, but there’s plenty of poverty. I love that it is liberal, but I hate its history of corruption.
I come away feeling very positive about Chicago, though. I experienced great kindness from strangers. It is big, but manageable. I love how it is designed around the beautiful lake, divided into distinct neighborhoods and each has so much personality.
I will be back, Windy City, for sure!
