Movies
I went to so many movies! Of course Barbiheimer was all the rage this summer, but I also saw:
“Joy Ride” (female friends go on an adventure to Asia; silly, raunchy, sex positive; I absolutely love Stephanie Hsu!).
The latest Indiana Jones movie. It was fine and I enjoyed it in a nostalgic way. Not terribly memorable as I try to consider it a few months later!
“Oppenheimer” was intense. The use of black and white flipping to color helped me keep track of the flashbacks. Sammie felt it fell apart at the end. The part that sticks with me is that there was a time when nuclear bombs didn’t exist. Pause. They didn’t exist. And they were intentionally created even though there were so many risks.

I almost didn’t go to “Barbie” because I hate Batbie dolls. The perfect woman thing gets under my skin. But I loved it. I laughed out loud so many times. I loved the scenes when they just listed the paradoxes women face daily. And, I loved weird Barbie. I know making a movie doesn’t fix all the problems with patriarchy, but it was validating to hear the problems named. My criticism is that Ken doesn’t do well in Barbieland. I believe it is possible to have a society where both women and men do well. We shouldn’t have to pick one gender over another.
