On Monday I headed to Brooklyn Heights, home to the amazing Jon and Elizabeth Dabney Hochman. Jon was one of the first people I met in law school, we were in the same small section and we were part of a four-person study group. He and Elizabeth had started dating about a year earlier when they were undergrads at Princeton. They are just as cute together now as they were then. Jon started his law firm years ago with some colleagues and it has grown! Elizabeth has an amazing voice, having studied and performed opera, and sang Ave Maria at Henry’s funeral; beautiful beyond words. She is the founder and chief editor of an on-line, international kid’s magazine called KidSpirit, which leads kids to think about big questions and build community. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner and spent hours talking.

There is a peacefulness about the Hochmans that feels like an oasis in the busy city. I learned they have a deep, long standing practice of meditation, which I am guessing contributes to the peace they exude. I am a very novice meditator and I learned a lot by talking to Jon and Elizabeth about their practices and meditating with them. I hope to increase my practice; it feels fitting that I will be doing so in various countries in Asia where the practice is so deep-rooted.
